SUMMARY:55Plus - Broken Mary: Finding Grace in Brokenness
DESCRIPTION:Attend on site or online \nSuggested donation $25 \nA modern Marian miracle: How a broken statue becomes the means of conversion and a ministry of mercy. \nMost Marian stories are rooted in ancient apparitions or centuries-old devotions. Kevin Matthews shows how the Blessed Mother still reaches out to people today\, even in a city alley next to a dumpster. That moment led to a powerful journey of faith and hope. No one is too broken to be loved. Discover how grace can be found in unexpected places. Told with Matthews’ signature good humor\, this confession of the brokenness of mankind is touchingly honest\, personally inspiring\, and full of hope. \nKevin Matthews is a Chicago radio legend whose impersonations\, pranks\, and comedy brought entertainment to millions. Many in Grand Rapids will remember his time as a DJ on WLAV.  When his health crumbled and his fame began to fade\, Matthews discovered redemption next to a dirty dumpster.  Broken Mary is Matthews’ story of his early years in radio and stand-up comedy\, his successful career\, his struggle with MS\, and\, most importantly\, his divine encounter with a broken statue of Mary that changed his life – and countless others. \nThis presentation is part of the 55plus Series – exploring spirituality and vitality in the second half of life. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:55 Plus Series - Eco-Theology and the Holy Spirit: A New Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Attend onsite or online \nSuggested donation: $15-25 \nAs we grow in age and wisdom\, we often reflect on the legacy that we will leave behind. This presentation offers a profound opportunity to deepen our understanding of the interconnectedness of nature and humanity through the lens of our faith. \nWe will explore how the Holy Spirit unites all of creation\, emphasizing our role in God’s magnificent design. And drawing inspiration from Pope Francis’ encyclical\, Laudato Sí\, we will discuss how our unique gifts can address the challenges facing our planet. Pope Francis reminds us that “the human environment and the natural environment deteriorate together; we cannot adequately combat environmental degradation unless we attend to causes related to human and social degradation” (LS\, 48). \nAs stewards of God’s creation\, we have a responsibility and privilege to heal both the earth and our communities. This Earth Day let’s come together to honor our sacred duty to care for one another and our planet. \nBarbara Yurasek Conklin is a recent graduate from Ohio Dominican University\, receiving a Master of Arts degree in Theology. She is the Marriage Preparation Coordinator for St. Peter’s parish in Douglas\, Michigan and supports various other ministries there as well. Barbara is passionate about marriage ministry\, supporting women in ministry\, and the environment. She is a loving wife and mother of three teenage children. Prior to having children Ms. Conklin worked in the Marriage and Family Life office at the Diocese of Columbus\, Ohio. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:55 Plus Series - Preparing for Judgment Day - Made Fun!
DESCRIPTION:Attend onsite or online \n$ 25 suggested donation \nJesus promises all of us a particular judgment at the moment of our death in which he will reference the words and deeds of our life with his. As we get closer to our personal judgment day\, we may wonder what else we can now do to prepare. This retreat provides a formula for reviewing your life in gratitude\, honestly evaluating what you’ve done and failed to do\, and offering several ways to enhance your life through praying\, relating\, worshipping\, studying\, and much more in the years you have left so that you can relish and not cower in your face-to-face meeting with the Lord. The retreat is based on the author’s book Reaching for Heaven: 14 Spiritual Goals as You Grow Older. Books will be on sale for $15 (cash\, check\, or Venmo). Also bring a Bible and a journal-style notebook. \nCatholics who were formed in the faith as the Second Vatican Council was being rolled out and who experienced the freedom of a kid who didn’t have to come inside until the street lights came on and who came of age in the “Me Generation” 70s will enjoy sharing memories of those days as part of this retreat. \nMichael Amodei is Executive Editor at Ave Maria Press\, Notre Dame Indiana. He is the author of several books\, including Reaching for Heaven: 14 Spiritual Goals as You Grow Older. He grew up in Southern California\, attending CCD classes just as the Second Vatican Council opened and the Church was changing. SUMMARY:55 Plus Series - From Jesus to the Christ: Conflicts and controversies in the early Church\, a historical approach
DESCRIPTION:Participate onsite or online \nSuggested donation: $15-25 \nThe Church began during the time of the Roman Empire. Set in this backdrop\, it was during these early years that various questions and thoughts about the nature of Christ arose. There was considerable conversation and controversy regarding the true nature of Christ.  In this presentation we will attempt to put some historical context on these theological debates.  What were some of these ideas and what role did the Roman Empire play in shaping the Churches ideas on these topics?  Specifically\, we will look at the ideas in Arianism\, Monophysitism and Diaphysitism as we discuss this interesting time in the history of the Christian Church. \nDave Evans is a lifelong Catholic with a 40-year career as a Research Scientist.  Even though he spent his professional life doing science he has always had an interest in history of the early Christian Church.  As a cradle Catholic he always wondered how the Church arrived at some of the precepts we believe.  As a way of growing in our faith he feels it is sometimes helpful if we understand some of the history behind these beliefs. \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:55Plus Series: Pain and Joy and the Journey of Faith
DESCRIPTION:Attend in-person or online \n$15-20 suggested donation \nChronic illness and pain can challenge us in myriad ways\, but most especially when our lived experience meets faith. Then\, we might find more questions than answers surfacing in our hearts: Why is God bringing such suffering?  Why do I have these challenges and others don’t? Is God listening to my prayers? What is the purpose in ongoing illness or pain? Although complete answers might elude us\, there is a wealth of insight and inspiration to be gleaned from the experience of illness and pain – and even\, joy! This presentation\, and the conversation we will have following it\, will frame the journey of faith within daily life with chronic illness and pain and offer prayerful and practical ways to reap abundant grace and encouragement all along the way. \nMaureen Pratt\, MTS\, MFA\, is an award-winning Catholic author of nine books including the devotional\, Peace in the Storm: Meditations on Chronic Pain and Illness (Image/Penguin Random House) and Beyond Pain: Job\, Jesus\, and Joy (Galilee Road Publishing) and\, for most of her life\, has experienced serious\, often-disabling\, pain and chronic illness\, including lupus. She is a popular\, national speaker on the more difficult places in our faith journey\, where belief meets disability\, chronic pain\, illness\, and caregiving. Maureen holds a Master of Theological Studies degree and is the Founder and Executive Director of The Peace in the Storm Ministry\, a new parish-based model of spiritual and theologically-sound accompaniment for those who live with chronic illness and pain. \nRegister Here!
