SUMMARY:Welcoming the Stranger
DESCRIPTION:$10 donation suggested \nOnline (Zoom) event \nPresented in English with instantaneous Spanish translation available \nRegistration required \nWe read in the Gospel of Matthew how Joseph\, his wife Mary and the infant Jesus fled Bethlehem because of a proclamation of King Herod and immigrated to Egypt until the time it was safe to return to their homeland. (cf. Mt.2:13-23) Their journey becomes an icon for our reflection on today’s situation of those migrating\, the impact of current US law\, and how this intersects with the Catholic faith. \nMigration\, considered globally\, is a structural phenomenon\, and not a passing emergency. The presence of so many people of different cultures here in the United States challenges us to a profound conversion. Migrants remind us of a basic aspect of our faith\, that we are all ‘strangers and exiles on the earth.’ (Heb 11:13) (Christus Vivit\, 91) \nVeronica Beltran is an attorney at the Southwest Detroit Immigrant and Refugee Center.  She began immigrant advocacy work at a young age in Holland\, MI\, where she attended St Francis de Sales Parish.  Veronica received her BA from Grand Valley State University and her Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. \nAngelica Garcia is a leader of a Strangers No Longer Immigrant Women’s Circle of Support.  She also serves as a Health Promoter\, outreaching to Spanish-speaking and migrant farmworker populations with information about COVID-19 and other health concerns\, through Strangers No Longer’s Somos Salud project.  Originally from Mexico\, Ms. Garcia now resides in Northern Michigan. \nAmy Ketner is staff to Strangers No Longer where supports advocacy for laws and policies that uphold the dignity of immigrants. Amy studied sociology at the University of Michigan. Through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps\, she lived two years in Santiago\, Chile\, accompanying youth and young adults. \nRebecca Lair-Ybanez is the Director of the Immigration Legal Services ministry of the Diocese of Grand Rapids. She attended Kalamazoo College where she majored in Spanish and Religion\, and during which time she spent 9 months studying abroad in Caceres\, Spain. Her love affair with immigration law began at Catholic Human Development Outreach in Grand Rapids in 2000 where she spent 3 1/2 years working in the Immigration Advocacy and Assistance Program. In 2003\, she went to law school with the goal of returning to non-profit work in immigration law. After law school she took a brief detour into the world of individual international taxation for a Chicago accounting firm before returning to Michigan to practice immigration law at St. Vincent Catholic Charities in Lansing in 2011. In 2013 she returned to her hometown of Grand Rapids when she accepted her current position. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Stories of God; Stories of Faith
DESCRIPTION:$15 donation suggested (lunch included) \nIn-Person (limited space) and online (Zoom) event \nRegistration required \n  \nThe ancient stories of the Bible have been spoken\, written\, translated\, and told for millenia. There is power in these stories. Yet so many of them are confusing\, hard to understand and even harder to share with children. How do we pass on our stories of God to the next generation? How do we share our stories of faith? Using the newly released illustrated children’s Bible\, I Wonder: Exploring God’s Grand Story\, Glenys Nellist will explore how we can hear and retell the stories of the Bible in a way that will encourage young hearts and minds to wonder about God\, and their part in God’s grand story. This Bible is a gentle exploration of our faith and will enable participants to walk alongside their grandchildren\, nieces\, nephews\, and godchildren in a way that is invitational\, non-threatening and filled with wonder. \nGlenys Nellist was born and raised in a little village in northern England. The author of multiple children’s books\, including the bestselling ‘Twas the Evening of Christmas\, The Wonder That is You\, and four popular series: Love Letters from God\, Snuggle Time\, Good News and Little Mole\, her writing reflects a deep passion for helping children discover joy and hope in the world. Glenys lives in Michigan with her husband\, David. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:The Greatest Catholic Story Ever Told: Dante’s Pilgrimage Through Hell\, Purgatory\, and Heaven
DESCRIPTION:$10 donation suggested \nIn-Person (limited space) and online (Zoom) event \nRegistration required \nIn March 2021\, Pope Francis urged “Christian communities…and cultural associations to promote initiatives making known the message of Dante’s great medieval poem\, The Divine Comedy\, “in all its fullness.” \nDante is to Catholic literature what Michelangelo is to Catholic art and architecture\, and what Augustine and Aquinas are to Catholic theology: the best of our tradition and cultural patrimony. Dante\, says Pope Francis\, “wants to show us the route to happiness\, the right path to live a fully human life\, emerging from the dark forest in which we lose our bearings and the sense of our true worth.” \nIn this lecture\, Greg Smith\, Dean of the Lakeshore Academy for the New Evangelization (L.A.N.E.) will introduce us to The Divine Comedy. Why is it the greatest Catholic story ever told? What can it show us about our own pilgrim journey toward eternal joy? And how can we use its insights to live better lives? \nFor four decades\, Greg Smith has written and taught about as well as traveled throughout the Christian world – over thirty of those as a Protestant. After a decade-long “Road to Rome” journey\, Greg and his wife joined the Catholic Church in 2016. With his eclectic background\, he brings a global perspective on the historic Christian faith. Currently\, Greg serves as the Director of Ministries at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church\, teaches at the Lakeshore Academy for the New Evangelization\, and is the founder of One Whirling Adventure. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Integral Ecology & Science in Laudato Si': Not-So-Strange Bedfellows
DESCRIPTION:$10 donation suggested \nIn-Person (limited space) and online (Zoom) event \nRegistration required \nRegister at https://bit.ly/CICScienceLaudatoSi \nIntegral ecology is at the heart of Pope Francis’ vision for creation care as expressed in his famous encyclical Laudato Si’. This lecture explores the scientific aspects of integral ecology\, along with the Pope’s approach to science in the encyclical. What can we learn from this as Catholics? Come reflect together on how these not-so-strange bedfellows might bring a spirit of dialogue and unity to our polarized society\, especially in relation to pressing contemporary questions of natural and social ecology.  \nSister Damien Marie Savino\, FSE\, Ph.D.\, is a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist and currently serves as the Dean of Science and Sustainability at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. In this position she oversees the Biology\, Chemistry\, Physics\, Geography and Environmental Studies departments and the college’s Center for Sustainability.  \nSister Damien Marie received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biogeography from McGill University\, her Master of Science degree in Soil and Plant Science from University of Connecticut\, her Master of Arts degree in Theology from The Catholic University of America and her Ph.D. degree in Civil (Environmental) Engineering from The Catholic University of America. She has lectured and written widely on Laudato Si’ and integral ecology\, as well as on themes related to ecological restoration and resilience theory\, ecological health\, ecology and theology\, and science and faith. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:The Life and Message of Sister Thea Bowman: Let Your Light Shine
DESCRIPTION:2021 Annual Gallagher Talk featuring Brother Mickey McGrath\, OSFS \nFranciscan Sister Thea Bowman (1937-1980) integrated her Catholic faith and African American pride and serves as a beacon for the Church to celebrate diversity\, inclusiveness\, and love for all God’s children. Through her ministry of public speaking\, she touched countless people\, bearing a message of faith and hope rooted in the Gospels and the wisdom of the spirituals. In her final ordeal with cancer\, she offers an inspiring example of what it means to be “fully alive” and to “live until one dies”. In May 2018\, Sister Thea Bowman was declared a servant of God\, a first step toward sainthood.  Brother Mickey McGrath is among those whose life was changed by her witness and story. Inspired by her message that God wants each of one of us to “let our little light shine” he found his own vocation as a religious artist. Here\, through a collection of paintings and his reflections on her life and teaching\, McGrath celebrates the spirit of one the great prophets and spiritual guides of our time. It is a message that makes one rejoice in life and say Amen! \nThe annual Gallagher Talk honors the life and work of Father Joseph V. Gallagher\, CSP (Catholic Information Center Director\, 1978-1982).  Father Gallagher believed that creating a “future brighter than any past” would demand ministries that reached beyond local churches into the marketplace at the nexus of culture and faith. The annual talk helps the Catholic Information Center meet our mission of connecting with those who are seeking to understand the teachings of the Catholic Church and continue making the “future brighter than any past”. \nBrother Mickey McGrath\, OSFS paints\, writes\, and tells stories\, then travels telling the many stories behind what he paints and writes. Brother Mickey majored in Art at Moravian College and later received an MFA in Painting at the American University. For eleven years\, he was an associate professor of Studio Art and Art History at De Sales University. Since 2009\, he has lived and worked in Camden\, NJ where he furthered his art education in the context of social justice and finding beauty in the margin. He will be celebrating 43 years as a Religious Brother in the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales this year.  \n(Registration required) In-Person Class or Online with Zoom \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Integral Ecology as the Beating Heart of Catholic Discipleship
DESCRIPTION:$10 donation suggested \nRegistration required. Choose to attend in-person or on Zoom. \n  \n“A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse\, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.” Isaiah 11:1 \nExplore both the theological richness of integral ecology presented in Laudato Sí and how care for creation is a profoundly faithful way to be Catholic and live out Catholic Social Teaching – as individuals and collectively as church. Scripture and the Tradition of the Church pour meaning into the term ‘integral ecology’ and shape how Catholics can live faithfully and love abundantly in the 21st century. Time will be given for prayerful reflection\, practical application\, and meaningful discussion. \nCatherine Wright\, M.Div.\, Ph.D. is a transplanted Canadian Catholic ecotheologian who supports Creation Care Teams (CCTs) in her diocese and across the US as they strive to live the truths of Laudato Sí. She works at Wingate University (NC) as both the chair of the Religion and Philosophy Department and the executive director for the new center for innovation\, community engagement and sustainable development on campus — the Collaborative for the Common Good. Her latest book is Caring for Our Common Home: A Practical Guide to Laudato Sí (Paulist Press\, 2020) and recently she helped oversee the CCTs panel at the “Laudato Sí and the US Catholic Church Conference” hosted by Creighton University and Catholic Climate Covenant.
SUMMARY:JustFaith – Sacred Land: Food and Farming
DESCRIPTION:$25 donation (Includes Books) \n(Registration required) Zoom and In-person classes \nIn his letter Laudato Sì\, Pope Francis teaches about the need to care for our common home\, Earth. JustFaith – Sacred Land: Food and Farming will explore our connection with the land and our responsibility for it. Together\, small groups learn how food and farming practices affect the climate crisis\, marginalized communities\, and their own health and spiritual wellbeing. Participants explore practical ways to support\, advocate for\, and implement sustainable food and farming practices in the communities and the institutions of which they’re a part — whether it’s their workplace\, congregation\, apartment complex\, or neighborhood. Each participant works toward a plan of action: for example\, this could be starting a composting program with their next-door neighbors\, building a community garden with their congregation\, or advocating for local and national policies that support sustainable food and farming practices. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Understanding the “Our Father”
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Tim Carmody \n$15 donation (lunch included) \n(Registration required) In-Person Class \nThe Our Father is THE prayer of Christians. The problem is that we all know it so well and say it so often that we fail sometimes to allow its images to challenge and transform us. This presentation will situate the Our Father within its context in Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount. We will consider the careful structure of the prayer and then examine the petitions for their comfort and challenge.  We will focus primarily on the petitions for bread\, forgiveness and no “temptation”. \nDr. Timothy Carmody\, Professor Emeritus of Theology at Spring Hill College in Mobile\, Alabama\, is a graduate of the Catholic University of America and a long-time member of the Catholic Biblical Association. In 2018 he was awarded a CCD/CBA Grant by the USCCB for developing and teaching biblical courses in the deacon formation program for the Diocese of Jackson. His book\, Reading the Bible (Paulist Press 2004)\, is a well-used textbook in college courses and Bible study groups. He is also the author of The Gospel of Mark: Question by Question (Paulist Press 2008). He continues to give lectures\, workshops\, and retreats on the Bible throughout the country. \nClick Here to Register
