SUMMARY:Young Adults: Interfaith Voices in West Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by Zahabia Ahmed-Usamani\, Program Coordinator\, Kaufman Interfaith Institute \n$10 donation suggested \n(Registration required)  Zoom Presentation \nJoin us for a virtual panel discussion of three young adults—Jewish\, Islamic\, and Christian—sharing their faith and experience. They will explore the spiritual needs and practices of young adults\, especially as the pandemic begins to recede. This panel discussion will be facilitated by Zahabia Ahmed-Usamani\, program coordinator for the Kaufman Interfaith Institute at Grand Valley University. All ages welcome. \nZahabia Ahmed-Usmani is Program Coordinator at the Kaufman Interfaith Institute. She oversees the youth programming and works on arts and culture initiatives for the institute. For over 16 years it has been her passion to infuse DEIB (Diversity\, Equite\, Inclusion and Belonging) into work\, school\, volunteer\, and personal endeavors. Interfaith Foodies- a group that met monthly to cook and eat together along with the Youth Summer Service Day Camps that Kaufman offered were among her favorite programs. The way they built relationships and expanded understanding were inspiring. When Zahabia isn’t officially doing interfaith work she is plugging away at her Masters in Public Administration\, caring for her family\, volunteering in the community\, or relaxing with friends.  \nPanelists are: \nAbdel-Salem Abada \nCatie Gammon \nNicole Newman \n  \nCo-sponsored by the Catholic Information Center and the Kaufman Interfaith Institute. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Nurturing Inner Peace
DESCRIPTION:$10 donation suggested \n(Registration required) In-Person Class \n“Our minds are like crows. They pick up everything that glitters\, no matter how uncomfortable our nests get with all that metal in them.” –Thomas Merton \nFor many\, the slower pace and quieter existence discovered during the pandemic was an unexpected gift. For some\, the pandemic brought endless demands to meet needs in new ways. Emerging from the pandemic experience and back into mainstream living can be challenging. We invite you to join us for an evening of exploration as we journey to the quiet. Together we will explore ways to be intentional about nurturing our inner peace through mindfulness and the practice of contemplation. \nMary Wcisel is a practicing spiritual director\, currently working as a process graphic designer at CommunityWorks\, Inc. There she creates images and materials for contemplative planning and discernment processes for national and international religious communities. She has also served in parish ministry as a director of pastoral care and as a coordinator for youth ministry.  Throughout her ministries and busy family life\, she has come to realize the essential need for practicing mindfulness and returning to the place of inner peace. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:JustFaith – Sacred Land: Food and Farming
DESCRIPTION:$25 donation (Includes Books) \n(Registration required) Zoom and In-person classes \nIn his letter Laudato Sì\, Pope Francis teaches about the need to care for our common home\, Earth. JustFaith – Sacred Land: Food and Farming will explore our connection with the land and our responsibility for it. Together\, small groups learn how food and farming practices affect the climate crisis\, marginalized communities\, and their own health and spiritual wellbeing. Participants explore practical ways to support\, advocate for\, and implement sustainable food and farming practices in the communities and the institutions of which they’re a part — whether it’s their workplace\, congregation\, apartment complex\, or neighborhood. Each participant works toward a plan of action: for example\, this could be starting a composting program with their next-door neighbors\, building a community garden with their congregation\, or advocating for local and national policies that support sustainable food and farming practices. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Understanding the “Our Father”
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Tim Carmody \n$15 donation (lunch included) \n(Registration required) In-Person Class \nThe Our Father is THE prayer of Christians. The problem is that we all know it so well and say it so often that we fail sometimes to allow its images to challenge and transform us. This presentation will situate the Our Father within its context in Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount. We will consider the careful structure of the prayer and then examine the petitions for their comfort and challenge.  We will focus primarily on the petitions for bread\, forgiveness and no “temptation”. \nDr. Timothy Carmody\, Professor Emeritus of Theology at Spring Hill College in Mobile\, Alabama\, is a graduate of the Catholic University of America and a long-time member of the Catholic Biblical Association. In 2018 he was awarded a CCD/CBA Grant by the USCCB for developing and teaching biblical courses in the deacon formation program for the Diocese of Jackson. His book\, Reading the Bible (Paulist Press 2004)\, is a well-used textbook in college courses and Bible study groups. He is also the author of The Gospel of Mark: Question by Question (Paulist Press 2008). He continues to give lectures\, workshops\, and retreats on the Bible throughout the country. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Garden of Eden and God’s Will for Our Future
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Tim Carmody \n$10 donation suggested \n(Registration required) In-Person Class \n  \nThe story of the Garden of Eden is one of the best-known Biblical stories. But\, when we read the account\, it is easy to focus on the portrayal of the first sin and punishment instead of the message of God’s original creation.  This presentation will look at the significance of God’s creation of humans and the garden and how it reveals God’s purpose for humanity. Then we will be able to see that the failure in the garden is actually telling us about God’s will for our future. \nDr. Timothy Carmody\, Professor Emeritus of Theology at Spring Hill College in Mobile\, Alabama\, is a graduate of the Catholic University of America and a long-time member of the Catholic Biblical Association. SUMMARY:The Deeper Meaning of the Feast of the Ascension
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Sr. Mary Kay Oosdyke\, OP \n$10 donation suggested \n(Registration Required)  Zoom Presentation \n  \nThe Ascension of Jesus—What does this feast mean for our faith and daily life? The Ascension account by Luke seems more like just tying things together after the Resurrection instead of a call to new vision and action. Yet\, the Church gives that event the status of a major Feast. Even artists often have trouble portraying the meaning of the feast in their stained-glass windows and paintings. Together we will discover the rich message and deeper meaning of this mysterious feast and what revelation God intends for us today through its celebration. \n  \nSr. Mary Kay Oosdyke\, OP is a Dominican Sister of Grand Rapids currently involved in Adult Faith Education and Spiritual Formation after years of teaching theology and ministry in colleges and seminaries. SUMMARY:Emerging with Hope
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 24\, 10-11:30 am \nPresented by Nancy Clancy \n$10 donation suggested \n(Registration Required)  Zoom Presentation \nThis past year has been hard on many people in many ways. Our feelings of security and loneliness have been blown about in a storm. In John 11\, Martha and Mary had some of the same feelings as they were mourning the loss and the death of their brother. When Jesus arrives\, he finds Lazarus has been in the tomb for four days. He says\, “Lazarus\, come out.” How might Jesus’ words speak to our hearts and our spirits? Join us to reflect\, pray\, and share your wisdom.  \nNancy Clancy is married to Rick and the parent of two adult children. Her background is in education\, culminating in a master’s degree in theology and post degree work in spirituality. She is currently retired from full time ministry after more than 30 years ministering in a variety of catechetical positions in parishes in the archdiocese of Detroit. Her final professional years were spent at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Community in Lake Orion\, Michigan where she continues to worship and serve. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Called to Be Anti-Racist: Ideas for Christians
DESCRIPTION:With special guest\, Jessie Bazan\, M.Div.\, Writer & Theologian\, Collegeville Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research \n(Registration Required)  Zoom Presentation \nThe call of the current moment—a moment built on hundreds of years of oppression—requires people to discern the steps each can take to become more anti-racist. What might this discernment look like?  Fr. She is editor and coauthor of Dear Joan Chittister: Conversations with Women in the Church (Twenty-Third Publications) and a regular columnist for U.S. Catholic magazine. SUMMARY:Give Up Worry for Lent: 40 Days to Finding Peace in Christ
DESCRIPTION:With Guest Author\, Gary Zimak \nRSVP by February 20 \nWhat is Lent all about? The first recorded words of Jesus in Mark’s gospel sum it up nicely: “The time is fulfilled\, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent\, and believe in the gospel” (Mk 1:15). Lent is a time to turn away from our earthly attachments and turn towards Christ; to give up bad habits and offer up our suffering to the Lord. \nBut how many of your past Lenten sacrifices have truly brought you closer to God? While giving up sweets\, alcohol\, or social media for Lent can certainly be offered up as suffering\, it is debatable whether forgoing them will bring about a lasting change in our lives. \nGive Up Worry for Lent! suggests a new approach: banishing worry from your life. The Lenten journey involves closing the door on the past. In this presentation\, author Gary Zimak encourages you to end your old life of worrying and enter into a new life of peace—with Jesus as your guide.  ($10 donation requested) \nGary Zimak is the bestselling author of several books\, including Give Up Worry For Lent!\, Let Go of Anger and Stress!\, and Stop Worrying and Start Living. His work has appeared in Catholic Digest\, the National Catholic Register\, Catholic Exchange\, Catholic Philly\, and Catholic Answers Magazine. Zimak has appeared on numerous television and radio programs\, including EWTN’s Bookmark and Women of Grace\, Catholic Connection\, and the Son Rise Morning Show.  He is a frequent speaker and retreat leader at Catholic parishes and conferences across the country. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Encore Institute: Young Adults in Today’s Church
DESCRIPTION:With Fr. Michael Hennessy\, CSP & Deacon Mike Cruickshank \n(RSVP by January 29)  Zoom Presentation \nPope Francis\, in his 2019 apostolic exhortation to young people\, Christus Vivit\, wrote that “we cannot just say that young people are the future of our world. They are its present; even now\, they are helping to enrich it. Young people are no longer children. They are at a time of life when they begin to assume a number of responsibilities\, sharing alongside adults in the growth of the family\, society and the Church. Yet the times are changing\, leading us to ask: What are today’s young people really like? What is going on in their lives?”  \nTogether\, we’ll reflect on these two important questions and about how young adults view and understand the Church and their Catholic faith.  CFD: Spiritualty ($10 donation suggested) \nClick Here to Register
