That dream ended at age 11 when he was sexually abused by his pastor\, an experience that haunted him for decades. Forty years later\, Mack landed on his former pastor’s doorstep for a conversation\, and what happened next went beyond anything he ever imagined. \nMichael Mack’s solo\, 90-minute play\, Conversations with My Molester: A Journey of Faith recounts that odyssey\, chronicling the events that took him full circle away from – and back to – the Catholic Church.  Mack’s story offers a moving testament to hope and renewal. The play at its heart is about reconciliation\, social justice\, and healing. \nAbout Michael Mack: Award-winning poet\, playwright\, and performer Michael Mack is best known for his autobiographical solo plays Hearing Voices\, Speaking in Tongues\, about his mother’s recovery from schizophrenia\, and Conversations with My Molester: A Journey of Faith\, about the spirituality of trauma. Mack has performed these plays throughout out the United States\, including US Library of Congress\, Off-Off-Broadway at the Times Square Arts Center\, at Harvard and Yale universities\, Catholic Dioceses\, and for scores of mental health conferences– even at the FBI’s 32nd Annual Hostage Negotiation Seminar. \nMack served in the US Air Force before graduating from the Writing Program at MIT (where he studied under Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Maxine Kumin).  His poems have appeared in America\, the Beloit Poetry Journal\, Cumberland Poetry Review\, Journal of the American Medical Association\, and Southern Poetry Review. They have aired on NPR and are anthologized in Best Catholic Writing (2005 and 2007). \nFor more information about Michael Mack please visit his website at https://www.michaelmacklive.com \nThis play is co-sponsored by the Cathedral of Saint Andrew\, the Catholic Information Center\, Dominican Center at Marywood\, Dominican Sisters~Grand Rapids\, the Paulist Fathers & Aquinas College Campus Ministry.

SUMMARY:Holy Brew (Feb.)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 19\, January 16 & February 13\, 7-8:30pm \nWith Fr. Michael Hennessy\, CSP \nMeeting at Peppino’s Sports Grille (130 Ionia Avenue SW\, Grand Rapids\, MI 49503) \nBeing a young adult today—20s and 30s\, single or married—comes with many important (if not challenging) questions… \n How do I make the important decisions in a world of so many choices? \n\nHow can I find stability in my life when I get a new job—or a new city to live in—every few years?\nHow can I meet new people and create new friendships while sustaining the relationships I already have?\nWhat are the responsibilities I have to my family when I am living my own life?\nHow do I navigate the complicated world of social media and technology?\nWhat is the difference between being alone and being lonely?\n\nThe good news is that we don’t have to come up with these answers on our own! \nAt Holy Brew\, we come together one Thursday a month over a meal and a pint to talk through these topics. As Catholics\, we believe our church’s tradition and teaching can guide us through this formative time of our life. When we share our own experiences and listen to the journeys of other young adults\, we trust that the Holy Spirit speaks to our hearts and gives us the strength to live authentic Christian lives. SUMMARY:Holy Brew: What's Brewing in Your Life? (Nov)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Nov. 7\,  6:30-8pm \nWith Fr. Michael Hennessy\, CSP \nMeeting at Peppino’s Sports Grille (130 Ionia Avenue SW\, Grand Rapids\, MI 49503) \n Being a young adult today – 20s and 30s\, single or married – comes with many important (if not challenging) questions… \nHow do I make the important decisions in a world of so many choices? \n\nHow can I find stability in my life when I get a new job – or a new city to live in – every few years?\nHow can I meet new people and create new friendships while sustaining the relationships I already have?\nWhat are the responsibilities I have to my family when I am living my own life?\nHow do I navigate the complicated world of social media and technology?\nWhat is the difference between being alone and being lonely?\n\nThe good news is that we don’t have to come up with these answers on our own! \nAt Holy Brew we come together one Thursday a month over a meal and a pint to talk through these topics. As Catholics\, we believe our church’s tradition and teaching can guide us through this formative time of our life. When we share our own experiences and listen to the journeys of other young adults\, we trust that the Holy Spirit speaks to our hearts and gives us the strength to life authentic Christian lives. So\, bring a friend\, or come on your own and we’ll set you up at a table with other young adults. SUMMARY:Technology\, Distraction\, and Restless Hearts: Our Roadmap to the Peace of Christ
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, November 6\, 7-8:30pm \nWith Fr. Michael Hennessy\, CSP \nThey’ve done the research\, and the results aren’t so good!  Americans—of all backgrounds\, ages\, and religious traditions —are using technology more and more\, often accompanied by negative effects on our mental health and overall well-being. Yet\, this is not completely our fault: the technology we encounter in our daily lives—social media\, smartphones\, Netflix—has been engineered to hook us. \nSo where does that leave us as Catholics? What does our great spiritual tradition have to say about technology\, about the way our brains work\, about how to be fully engaged in our complex and connected world? Does our tradition offer us anything at all here or are we on our own to figure this all out? \nJoin us for a two-part conversation that weaves together Church teaching\, psychology\, scriptural insight\, and current research to understand our world a little better and chart a path forward. \n\nIn September\, we’ll survey the digital scene and begin to make connections between our connected world—social media and smartphones—and our spiritual lives.\nIn November\, we’ll reflect on what it is our souls long for\, how technology can confuse or enlighten this search\, and we’ll make a plan for our digital and spiritual lives.\n\nThese are significant questions without easy answers. Yet\, we are people of hope\, and also have great trust in the Holy Spirit’s guidance.  CFD: Spiritualty \n
