SUMMARY:Dagger John: The Making of Irish America
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 13\, 7-8:30pm \nWith Father Michael Hennessy\, CSP \nArchbishop John Hughes (1797-1864)\, better known as Dagger John because of his pugnacious personality\, was an Irish-born immigrant to the United States who became the Archbishop of New York. His life story is fascinating: he arrived in the United States at age 20\, worked as a laborer and farmer before becoming an influential member of the American Church hierarchy\, he built St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York\, and defended the waves of Irish immigrants arriving in the United States. Enjoy Irish tea and scones while discussing Hughes and John Loughery’s recent biography about Archbishop Hughes and reflect on the parallels between Dagger John’s church and society with our own.   CFD: Evangelization   ($10 donation requested.) \nGive Now by Selecting Quick Give or pay at class.  \n[gravityform id=”3″ title=”true” description=”true” ajax=”true” field_values=”program_title=Dagger John”]

SUMMARY:Holy Brew for Adults in their 20s and 30s: What’s Brewing in Your Life? The Holy Spirit\, Giver of Life (Feb.)
DESCRIPTION:Discussion Topic:  The Holy Spirit\, Giver of Life \nThursday\, February 7\, 6:30-8pm \nwith Fr. René Constanza\, CSP\, Sr. Maria Serra Garcia\, FSE & Fr. Michael Hennessy\, CSP \n*Meeting at 7 Monks Taproom (740 Michigan Street NE\, Grand Rapids\, MI) \nRegistration Required:  Call 616-459-7267 or email register@catholicinformationcenter.org \nEvery year on Pentecost\, we recall the Holy Spirit’s descent upon the disciples as they were hiding in fear after Jesus’ resurrection. SUMMARY:Heaven and the AfterLife
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 6\, 10am-11:30pm \nwith Sr. Mary Kay Oosdyke\, OP \nThis program will be live-streamed. \nChristians maintain a faith and a hope that there is something “more” beyond life on earth. That faith/hope is well grounded in Jesus Christ\, the Risen One. But our condolences of\, “He/She is in a better place\,” or “He/She is in heaven\,” at wakes and funerals leaves even us wondering about the meaning of what we have just said. Without meaning\, can words be comforting?  This program will look at some possibilities we can imagine of what might happen after death and then go back and look deeply at what our faith teaches us.  Bring your thoughts and questions to enrich our understanding of this life-shaping mystery.   CFD: Spirituality \n$10 Offering Suggested\n Give Now by Selecting Quick Give or pay at class.  \n[gravityform id=”3″ title=”true” description=”true” ajax=”true” field_values=”program_title=Heaven and the AfterLife”]

SUMMARY:Gallagher Talk: Your One Wild and Precious Life
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, January 28\, 7-8:30pm \nwith special guest:  Fr. Mark-David Janus\, CSP \nVocation comes from a Latin word which means calling\, in the sense that we are “called” to do something\, we are “called” to be someone. From the Christian perspective\, the one doing the “calling” is God. What do we feel we are called to do with our life? Who is the person we are called to be?  How you answer that question is probably the most interesting thing about you. It is the very core of our life’s happiness and fulfillment. It is also how we find God.  We are each given one wild precious life—So\, what are you going to do with yours?    CFD:   Spirituality      ($10  donation requested.) \n*Copies of Fr. Mark-David’s new book\, Your One Wild and Precious Life: Thoughts on Vocation\, will be available for purchase. \nThis program is underwritten by the: Fr. SUMMARY:Engaging Contemporary Prophetic Art: Posters for Hope\, Peace\, and Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 24\, 10:15-12:15pm\nwith Artist\, John August Swanson\nThroughout church history\, art has not only expressed Christian prayer but also embodied prophetic response to injustice. SUMMARY:Mary--Bridge between Catholics and Muslims?
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, November 5\, 7-8:30pm \nPresented by Rita George-Tvrtković \nHow has the Virgin Mary been “shared” by Christians and Muslims over time? We’ll begin by comparing Biblical and Qur’anic Annunciation stories\, and then sketch out the contours of a broad historical trajectory which has vacillated between two opposite ideas: Mary as interfaith bridge\, or Mary as interfaith barrier. We’ll examine pivotal texts\, art works\, and shrines which have brought Christians\, Muslims\, and Mary together\, and which have affected Catholic views of Islam in both positive and negative directions\, depending on time and place. We’ll end by learning what a key Vatican II document\, “Nostra Aetate\,” has to say about Muslims and Mary. Does this long history of sharing Mary continue to affect Christian-Muslim relations today?  CFD: Spirituality       ($10 donation requested) \n  \nRita George-Tvrtković (PhD\, University of Notre Dame) is associate professor of theology at Benedictine University in Illinois\, where she specializes in medieval and contemporary Christian-Muslim relations. SUMMARY:Holy Brew for Adults in their 20s and 30s: What’s Brewing in Your Life?
DESCRIPTION:Discussion Topic: Choice\, Discernment and the Holy Spirit II \nTuesday\, October 23\, 6-7:30pm \nWith Fr. This is an important question: does God in fact “call” us to a certain way of life – marriage or religious life or a single vocation – and if so\, how do we then know what that is? \nThe Holy Spirit can help us navigate this complicated – yet exciting – world we find ourselves in. SUMMARY:Liderazgo Basado en la Biblia
DESCRIPTION:Facilitada por Hugo Zamora y Valeria Scheid Zamora.
