SUMMARY:Movies that Matter!
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, November 14\, 6-8:30pm \nWith Fr. Bill Edens\, CSP \nCost: $15 per person (includes dinner) \nPlease pre-register by calling (616) 459-7267 \nJoin us for dinner\, a movie and discussion as we view important movies through “a lens of faith” and find surprising insights on the spiritual dimension of each film.  Movies are often today’s parables and we will discuss inspirational films that illustrate how great faith can transform our own life and the lives of those around us.   CFD: Spirituality \n  \n\nThe Hurricane starring Denzel Washington\n\nThis movie is a masterful study of racism and those who are entrapped by it.  It also explores what constitutes freedom\, the cost of following one’s conscience\, the cause for justice\, the importance of friendship\, and the power of words—written\, read and spoken.  Based on a true story\, the film tells the story of a man who could have been “one of the greatest fighters of all time\,” if he had not been falsely convicted of murder. \n Give Now by Selecting Quick Give or pay at class.  \n[gravityform id=”3″ title=”true” description=”true” ajax=”true” field_values=”program_title=Movies that Matter”] \n

SUMMARY:Mary--Bridge between Catholics and Muslims?
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, November 5\, 7-8:30pm \nPresented by Rita George-Tvrtković \nHow has the Virgin Mary been “shared” by Christians and Muslims over time? We’ll begin by comparing Biblical and Qur’anic Annunciation stories\, and then sketch out the contours of a broad historical trajectory which has vacillated between two opposite ideas: Mary as interfaith bridge\, or Mary as interfaith barrier. We’ll examine pivotal texts\, art works\, and shrines which have brought Christians\, Muslims\, and Mary together\, and which have affected Catholic views of Islam in both positive and negative directions\, depending on time and place. We’ll end by learning what a key Vatican II document\, “Nostra Aetate\,” has to say about Muslims and Mary. Does this long history of sharing Mary continue to affect Christian-Muslim relations today?  CFD: Spirituality       ($10 donation requested) \n  \nRita George-Tvrtković (PhD\, University of Notre Dame) is associate professor of theology at Benedictine University in Illinois\, where she specializes in medieval and contemporary Christian-Muslim relations. She is former associate director of the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Office for Ecumenical & Interreligious Affairs\, and currently serves on the USCCB’s National Catholic-Muslim Dialogue. Her books include Christians\, Muslims\, and Mary: A History (Paulist Press\, 2018). She lives in Chicago with her husband Zoran and their two children\, Anya and Luka. \n Give Now by Selecting Quick Give or pay at class.  \n[gravityform id=”3″ title=”true” description=”true” ajax=”true” field_values=”program_title=Mary – Bridge between Catholics and Muslims”]

SUMMARY:Holy Brew for Adults in their 20s and 30s: What’s Brewing in Your Life?
DESCRIPTION:Discussion Topic: Choice\, Discernment and the Holy Spirit II \nTuesday\, October 23\, 6-7:30pm \nWith Fr. Michael Hennessy\, CSP \n*Meeting at Brewery Vivant (925 Cherry St SE\, Grand Rapids\, MI 49506) \nRegistration Required:  Call 616-459-7267 or email register@catholicinformationcenter.org \nContinuing our discussion about choice in our lives\, we’ll talk about how we can apply the process of discernment to our vocation in life. This is an important question: does God in fact “call” us to a certain way of life – marriage or religious life or a single vocation – and if so\, how do we then know what that is? \nThe Holy Spirit can help us navigate this complicated – yet exciting – world we find ourselves in. With the Spirit’s assistance\, our 20s and 30s can be a time of joy\, peace\, and spiritual growth. \n[gravityform id=”3″ title=”true” description=”true” ajax=”true” field_values=”program_title=Holy Brew (Oct)”]

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, September 19\, 7-8:30pm \nWith Fr. Bill Edens\, CSP \nRemember the Baptismal promises you made?  “I reject Satan\, and all his lies\, and all his empty promises.” Do you ever think about what those promises mean in your daily life? SUMMARY:Sacraments\, Symbols and Rituals
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, September 17\, 7-8:45pm \nWith Sr. Mary Kay Oosdyke\, OP \nIt’s no secret that Catholic worship is different from many Christian denominations. At funerals and weddings priests give gentle directions to visitors.  And later we often get questions from friends about why we do what we do.   So\, what do we say?  Saying it’s tradition isn’t enough. How do these symbols and actions help us in our spiritual life\, in our relationship with God? SUMMARY:Finding Joy and Meaning in the Second Half of Life
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, September 11\, 10-11:30am (lunch included following the program) \nWith Fr. Joachim Lally\, CSP \nCost: $15.00 \nThis opening session of Encore is directed at some of the basic questions of our lives: What is our primary identity at this stage of our life? Are we focusing on the past\, the present\, or the future?  What is giving us a feeling of zest at this point in our lives?  Do we see any connections between the “first half of our life” and now the “second half of our life?” Are we closer or further away from finding meaning to the times of sufferings and losses of our lives? What spiritual practices draw us into deeper joy? Do we resonate with the recently spoken words of Pope Francis: “To follow God’s law\, begin with gratitude?” \nYou are invited to join us in the pondering and “living out” of these fundamental questions as we begin the Encore experience.   CFD: Spirituality \n Give Now by Selecting Quick Give or pay at class.  \n[gravityform id=”3″ title=”true” description=”true” ajax=”true” field_values=”program_title=Finding Joy and Meaning”]
