SUMMARY:Mysticism of the Present Moment
DESCRIPTION:$10 donation requested \nJoin in person or online \nRegistration required \nIt is through our senses that we encounter life\, creation\, and other humans. This is the basis of mysticism. Not contemplation that seems to be a complicated\, difficult action of the mind on some reality that is out there somewhere. Rather\, it is a contemplative approach that start with our senses anchoring us in the present moment. \nFred Johnson\, now retired\, was the director of adult faith formation for the Cathedral of Saint Andrew. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:55 Plus Series - Using “The Four Tendencies” to Bless Others and Ourselves
DESCRIPTION:$15 donation suggested\, lunch included \nJoin us in-person or online \nRegistration required \nGretchen Rubin is a NY Times best-selling author whose books (The Happiness Project\, Better Than Before and The Four Tendencies) combine to offer practical applications for work and home on how to succeed at habit change. By learning our own/others’ “tendencies” we can choose the best strategies to increase the likelihood that we will be able to sustain our good habits–and decrease our bad ones. In addition\, knowing our own and others’ tendencies can guide us in approaching others with suggestions that will not only be better received\, but may motivate healthy change (instead of the usual reminding\, nagging\, or bossing.) This enhances our ability to communicate\, problem-solve and use the gifts God has given us to bless others and ourselves. \nVicki Jansma is a school social worker\, speaker and music minister who loves to share her God-given gifts. Helping students grow in healthy habits of mind/body/spirit and sharing wisdom through song or word with adults are her passions (in addition of course to being Nana to 2 grandchildren.) She especially looks for opportunities to help others find and use new insights on our journey toward becoming all God intends us to be. As one of her favorite authors said “When we know better\, we do better” (Dr.Maya Angelou).  \nThis presentation is part of the 55 Plus Series\, exploring spirituality and vitality in the second half of life.  \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Gallagher Talk - Blindness\, Fear\, and Anger: Three Fates of Toxic Polarization…and How Our Faith Can Deal With Them
DESCRIPTION:Free presentation \nJoin us in-person or online \nRegistration required \nPolarization – as demonstrated in too many of our public social\, political\, cultural\, and religious interactions – tends to foster an insidious interplay amongst three ‘fates’ designed to misshape how we see and relate to one another\, to ourselves\, and even God.  These fates are not new to the human experience and the Catholic faith has always had ways of dealing with these dark forces – with virtue\, restoration\, and light.  In this talk\, Father Bell will identify these three ‘fates’ and how they work\, and the gifts of our faith and spirituality that can counteract them\, if we dare to use them. \nA native of Washington\, D.C.\, Paulist Father Steven Bell was ordained in 2008 and has served in campus ministry at the University of California Berkeley and Ohio State University\, as well as in parish ministry at St. Austin Church in Austin\, TX. Additionally\, he was the associate director of the media ministry “Busted Halo”. Today\, Father Bell leads parish missions\, retreats\, revivals\, and workshops\, all of which consider the importance of reconciliation and healing. \nIn a time when divided perspectives become polarizing on a daily basis\, Father Bell’s message of finding a path to reconciliation fosters hope and perseverance. \nThe Gallagher Talk honors the life and work of Father Joseph V. Gallagher\, CSP – Catholic Information Center Director\, 1978-1982.  Father Gallagher believed that creating a “future brighter than any past” would demand ministries that reach beyond local churches into the marketplace at the intersection of faith and life. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:What Dobbs v Jackson means for people of faith
DESCRIPTION:Presented by John Bursch \n$10 donation suggested \nJoin us in-person or online \nRegistration required \nMedia sound bites vying for our attention do not always provide a thorough analysis. At the same time legislative proposals and judicial briefs\, readily accessible through the internet\, are thick with technical and legal language. Between the two\, navigating civil discourse on any issue can be challenging. The Catholic information Center stands at the intersection of faith and life and offers this program to assist people of faith to deepen their understanding of the significance of the Supreme Court case that directly challenges the central holding in Roe v. Wade. \nJohn Bursch has argued 12 U.S. Supreme Court cases and more than 30 Michigan Supreme Court cases since 2011. He served as solicitor general for Michigan from 2011-2013. John defends religious liberty\, free speech\, and the right to life while also representing Fortune 500 companies\, foreign and domestic governments\, and top public officials in high-profile cases\, primarily on appeal. DESCRIPTION:$10 donation suggested \nHosted at St. Sebastian Parish Center\, Byron Center \nJoin us in-person or online \nRegistration required \nBefore becoming the sixth bishop of the Diocese of Grand Rapids\, Monsignor Francis Haas was a professor and dean at the Catholic University of America and served on the U.S. Fair Employment Practices Committee\, appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. “He was an academic and an activist\, a Midwesterner from Wisconsin. …Social justice to him was the heart of the gospel. Those who knew him and admired him said that was what gave him such a great heart.” (Where the Star Came to Rest) After the end of World War II\, Bishop Haas seized opportunities to create new apostolates and ministries to strengthen the faith of the people of his diocese. One of these apostolates was the mission of the Paulist Fathers\, who were invited in 1947 by Bishop Haas to establish an outreach ministry to non-Catholics and working people in downtown Grand Rapids. Join Monsignor Gus Ancona for an evening reflection on the life and times of Bishop Francis Haas and the beginnings of the Catholic Information Center. \nMonsignor Gaspar Ancona is a priest of the Diocese of Grand Rapids and author of the book\, “Where the Star Came to Rest: Stories of the Catholic People in West Michigan.” He is a regular columnist for FAITH Grand Rapids and will be celebrating his 59th year of ordained ministry in June. SUMMARY:Passion Narratives according to Saint Luke and Saint John: Jesus as Rejected Prophet and Birthing New Life
DESCRIPTION:$10 donation suggested \nJoin us in person or online \nRegistration required \nEach of the four Passion Narratives presents a different portrait of Jesus and a different explanation for his death. On Palm Sunday this year we hear the Lukan account\, which emphasizes Jesus as faithful prophet who brought good news to the people most in need\, but was rejected by those whose power\, privilege\, and status he threatened. On Good Friday\, the Johannine account gives us powerful images of how death and new life are juxtaposed as believers are born anew. Participants are encouraged to bring their Bibles and to read ahead of time Luke 22-24 and John 18-21. \nBarbara Reid\, OP\, PhD\, a Dominican Sister of Grand Rapids Michigan\, is the President and Carroll Stuhlmueller\, CP\, distinguished professor of New Testament Studies at Catholic Theological Union (CTU) in Chicago.
