SUMMARY:Dialogue in Church and Society
DESCRIPTION:$10 donation requested \nJoin in person or online \nRegistration required \nDialogue requires perseverance and patience\, but it also enables mutual understanding. What are the opportunities for diverse peoples in our community to come together for dialogue? How do we promote collaboration amid differences of vision\, belief\, or opinion? \nThis program is part of the Synod Conversation Series\, an ecumenical dialogue supporting members of area faith communities to live out our service in the world\, especially with those on the margins of society.  \nRev. She currently serves as Executive Director of Plainsong Farm\, a mission agency of the Episcopal Church started in 2015\, and rector of Holy Spirit Episcopal Church\, both in Michigan. She is the author of Resurrection Matters: Church Renewal for Creation’s Sake. \nBrian Plachta is an author\, spiritual mentor\, and holds a Masters in Pastoral Counseling. After taking a spiritual gifts inventory in his 30’s\, he discovered God was inviting him to a life of writing\, teaching\, and mentoring others on the spiritual path. Over the course of several years\, he moved from a full-time attorney to “Of Counsel” at the law firm he established so he could follow the call to serve others in new ways during the second half of his life.  \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:The Science of Polarization
DESCRIPTION:$10 donation suggested \nAttend in person or online \nRegistration required \nRegister at https://bit.ly/CICPolarization \nOur brains are wired for survival. When you first meet a person\, your brain almost instantly judges them to determine if they are a threat. Are they a friend or foe\, a part of your group or an outsider? This fast-paced session will help you better understand the subtle inner workings of our brains and behaviors that influence how we perceive and interact with others— and how they perceive and interact with others. We’ll cover how our mind works\, how groups work\, and how understanding the neuroscience and social science behind polarization can help each of us become more resilient to toxic forms of division. \nKevin McIntosh is the Michigan Regional Outreach Manager for One America Movement\, whose mission is to build a united American society by eliminating toxic polarization. Kevin earned his B.A. in Religious Studies and History from Emory University and his Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School. SUMMARY:Storytelling Through Difficult Topics
DESCRIPTION:$10 donation suggested \nAttend in person or online \nRegistration required \nIn today’s world\, it’s tempting to remove people from our lives who have different opinions than we do. But the result is that we create an echo chamber where the only thoughts we hear are ones that mirror our own. It doesn’t take long to fall into unhealthy behavior patterns that reinforce our differences and eliminate the opportunity to work together on the issues that matter. Join us for an interactive workshop to learn how to use storytelling to have productive\, meaningful discussions with people who don’t think\, vote\, or believe the same way you do. \nKevin McIntosh is the Michigan Regional Outreach Manager for One America Movement\, whose mission is to build a united American society by eliminating toxic polarization. SUMMARY:55 Plus Series - Using “The Four Tendencies” to Bless Others and Ourselves
DESCRIPTION:$15 donation suggested\, lunch included \nJoin us in-person or online \nRegistration required \nGretchen Rubin is a NY Times best-selling author whose books (The Happiness Project\, Better Than Before and The Four Tendencies) combine to offer practical applications for work and home on how to succeed at habit change. By learning our own/others’ “tendencies” we can choose the best strategies to increase the likelihood that we will be able to sustain our good habits–and decrease our bad ones. In addition\, knowing our own and others’ tendencies can guide us in approaching others with suggestions that will not only be better received\, but may motivate healthy change (instead of the usual reminding\, nagging\, or bossing.) This enhances our ability to communicate\, problem-solve and use the gifts God has given us to bless others and ourselves. \nVicki Jansma is a school social worker\, speaker and music minister who loves to share her God-given gifts. Helping students grow in healthy habits of mind/body/spirit and sharing wisdom through song or word with adults are her passions (in addition of course to being Nana to 2 grandchildren.) She especially looks for opportunities to help others find and use new insights on our journey toward becoming all God intends us to be. As one of her favorite authors said “When we know better\, we do better” (Dr.Maya Angelou).  \nThis presentation is part of the 55 Plus Series\, exploring spirituality and vitality in the second half of life.  \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Gallagher Talk - Blindness\, Fear\, and Anger: Three Fates of Toxic Polarization…and How Our Faith Can Deal With Them
DESCRIPTION:Free presentation \nJoin us in-person or online \nRegistration required \nPolarization – as demonstrated in too many of our public social\, political\, cultural\, and religious interactions – tends to foster an insidious interplay amongst three ‘fates’ designed to misshape how we see and relate to one another\, to ourselves\, and even God.  These fates are not new to the human experience and the Catholic faith has always had ways of dealing with these dark forces – with virtue\, restoration\, and light.  In this talk\, Father Bell will identify these three ‘fates’ and how they work\, and the gifts of our faith and spirituality that can counteract them\, if we dare to use them. \nA native of Washington\, D.C.\, Paulist Father Steven Bell was ordained in 2008 and has served in campus ministry at the University of California Berkeley and Ohio State University\, as well as in parish ministry at St. Austin Church in Austin\, TX. Additionally\, he was the associate director of the media ministry “Busted Halo”. Today\, Father Bell leads parish missions\, retreats\, revivals\, and workshops\, all of which consider the importance of reconciliation and healing. \nIn a time when divided perspectives become polarizing on a daily basis\, Father Bell’s message of finding a path to reconciliation fosters hope and perseverance. \nThe Gallagher Talk honors the life and work of Father Joseph V. Gallagher\, CSP – Catholic Information Center Director\, 1978-1982.  Father Gallagher believed that creating a “future brighter than any past” would demand ministries that reach beyond local churches into the marketplace at the intersection of faith and life. \nRegister Now
