Dear Friends,

When we think of the phrase missionary disciple, it can be intimidating. It can conjure up images of moving to another country, giving up all your comforts, or meeting strangers and striking up conversations about faith.

The truth is that while these experiences may be part of living as a missionary disciple, the call most of us receive is much closer to home. We are called to be ready to connect with people and respond to them as Jesus would.

We all wish that all our loved ones were closer to God, returning to church and discovering the joy of serving others. Many have been hurt by a church that was supposed to help them, confused by the messages of the world, or lost in a sea of technology and distractions. Yet the teachings of Jesus remain as relevant and life-giving today as ever. With that in mind, here is some encouragement for all missionary disciples.

Be a good listener. Instead of trying to fix everything or teach people the right way, simply be present. People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care. I have been journeying with some friends for many years, and they still have not made a move toward Jesus. Yet every time they call, I answer, because it is one more opportunity to show compassion, grace, and friendship.

Live a holy life. Not a perfect life, but one centered on the sacraments, faithfulness, and the desire to grow a little closer to Christ each day. The life of a disciple is to stay close to the Master, who is Jesus. Read Scripture daily and allow it to illuminate your spirit and guide your decisions. The saints are beautiful examples of how to remain faithful through challenges. Ask one of them to intercede for you, especially in difficult circumstances.

Be a risk taker. Missionaries are willing to take risks. Think of St. Paul. He was always sharing meals with unexpected people, speaking with nonbelievers, and building relationships wherever he went. He was genuinely curious about how others lived, what they thought about, and how they communicated. Once he understood their situation and heard the desires of their hearts, he could share his experience of Jesus in a way that made them lean in and listen.

As we transition into fall, we missionary disciples will have plenty of opportunities to listen, learn, and take risks. We will meet new faces in our schools, new players on our sports fields, and new colleagues in our workplaces. Ask Jesus whom He wants to bring into your path this week. May we all experience many divine appointments to share our story and witness His love and mercy in the world.
