Friends of the Center Newsletter – August 2025

August 2025

Dear Friends,

Have you ever received news so life-changing that time seemed to pause around you? After the angel Gabriel’s stunning announcement, Mary could have done just that – paused to process the gravity of it all. She had just been told she would bear the Son of God.

But instead of retreating into reflection or fear, Scripture tells us something astonishing: “Mary set out in haste” (Lk 1:39). At a moment when we might expect uncertainty or delay, Mary moved – with purpose and gladness, unburdened by fear or doubt. She visited her cousin Elizabeth, carrying not just a hidden miracle within her womb, but also the joy and urgency of her mission.

This is the Mary we celebrate on the Feast of the Assumption – a woman always in motion, not merely for motion’s sake, but because love propelled her. From Nazareth to Ein Karem, from the manger to the cross, from the Upper Room to her heavenly glory, Mary’s life is one of faithful movement toward others. Her Assumption crowns a journey of self-giving love – God drawing her fully into His promise and presence.

Our faith invites us to imitate this Marian momentum. Pope Francis often reminds us that missionary disciples are never stagnant. Like Mary, we are called to rise and go: to seek the lonely neighbor, to reach out to the estranged family member, to invite a friend to Mass or a CIC event. Missionary discipleship doesn’t always mean boarding a plane to far-off lands. Sometimes it looks like a walk across the street, a text message of encouragement, or a simple, “Would you like to come with me?”

In a world that often prizes individualism and self-preservation, Mary’s haste is countercultural. It says: God has done great things for me, and I must go share this. Her joy was never hoarded; it overflowed.

What if this is your moment to move, as Mary did, with glad urgency and love that overflows? The Assumption reminds us that heaven isn’t a distant hope for the holy few, but the destiny of those who let their lives be moved by love.

May we be found always on the way – toward Christ, toward our neighbor, toward the mission. And may Mary, assumed into heaven, guide our steps with her same bold yes.

Hail Mary, full of grace, move our hearts today with your faith and courage…

In gratitude and hope,

Rev. Dat Tran, CSP

Women of Vision: Exploring the Lives and Legacies of Women in the Catholic Tradition

September 3, 2025

A new four-part series celebrating the lives, charisms, and spiritual contributions of women throughout Catholic history. They shaped the Church and the world around them, building a legacy of resilience, vision, and innovation. They mirror for us our own missionary discipleship at the service of the world today.

Sister Barbara E. Reid, O.P., Ph.D., a Dominican Sister of Grand Rapids, is the President of Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and the Carroll Stuhlmueller Distinguished Professor of New Testament Studies. She is also General Editor for the Wisdom Commentary Series, a new 58-volume feminist commentary on the Bible published by Liturgical Press.
